Creating an Effective Board

Conducting a Board Assessment

The Board is responsible for its own performance. A Board Assessment is an exercise in self reflection. A good board should consider its own effectiveness at least once a year and particularly at times of change such as a change in board composition, strategy or CEO.

We recommend a board assessment that includes an evaluation of:

  1. The role of the board

  2. The composition of the board

  3. Board culture and practices

We recommend covering the topics separately in this order. However, there can be significant interdependencies, e.g. you might find it helpful to revisit the role of the board after culture and practices.

The easiest format for a board assessment is a meeting / call. Larger organizations may want to consider something more sophisticated, e.g. facilitator and questionnaires.
